Zar Electrik

Morocco / France

In the last few decades, the term ‘world music’ has been so over-used that it has become tattered and time worn, and has come to signify almost nothing. Zar Electrik’s jubilant swirling melodies and percussive mash-ups could change that. For, if ever that tag belonged to, or described a band – it’s this Marseilles based trio!

More than anything else, Zar Electrik is a musical conversation between friends. The trio creates a universe that is natural and unforced, despite the distant points on the compass from which each player’s musical tradition originates. Anass Zine’s mesmerising voice and oud lay the foundation for their songs. Arthur Peneau’s deep voice and kora melodies provide depth and dimension, while Miosine (Didier Simione) knits it all together with layers of electronic sound and syncopated beats.

The result is simply spectacular. Zar Electrik’s sonic blend is rich and vibrant and takes you on a transcending journey between the Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the West. Their music pays homage to tribal cultures – their name refers to an Egyptian ritual designed to dispel evil spirits and serve as a conduit for healing achieved through trance and connection with the spirit world.

It hardly needs to be said, but Zar Electrik is best encountered through movement.  Be ready to get up off your blanket, dance and transform when they play at the festival this July!
