Tina Dico

Denmark

Tina Dico’s songs are observational and reflective narratives about the people and the world around her. Her recordings range from sparkling layered gems that ebb and flow beneath a dancing line of compelling lyrics, to sparse but complementary acoustic foundations supporting honest and intimate vocals. Her arrangements are both simple and lush. Dico’s voice leads it all: resonant and assured, there’s an underlying confidence in the truths she uncovers. Grounding it all is her dedication to her craft. She cites Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Tracy Chapman as huge influences.

Dico’s interest in playing music started in an eighth grade cover-band. She went on to study at The Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, but left to pursue her dream of being a professional singer-songwriter.

Her career has taken her from topping the charts five times in her native Denmark, to collaborations with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra. She was awarded the Steppeulv (the Danish music critics award) in the category “Composer of the year” and a Danish Music Award for “Songwriter of the year”. Yet, for all these accolades, Dico has stayed true to her vision.

Dico comes to our festival with her partner and collaborator Helgi Jónsson. They met touring Canada around 2009 and became touring partners for several years before becoming a couple. They reside in Iceland, working closely together on almost everything they create. This is their only Canadian stop, so don’t miss the chance to experience this acclaimed artist. -LP
