Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2024

Moontricks

British Columbia

From their base in the Nelson area, Nathan Gurley and Sean Rodman – known as the nationally-renowned electro-folk duo Moontricks – find their inspiration in the changing cycles of the natural world. Theirs, too, is a uniquely hybrid sound: each song is steeped in tradition yet polished with a futuristic sheen, mixing organic folks, roots rock and old-time blues with modern electronic production. Initially uncertain of the reception their “electronic banjo twangy music” would have, they found they didn’t have to worry.  It’s a unique fusion that has attracted countless listeners both from the folk and EDM worlds.

Gurley and Rodman first connected at the Shambala Festival, then collaborated on a series of soundscapes that eventually developed into their signature electro-folk sound. Since its initial release, their breakout hit “Home” (2013) has reached over 5 million streaming plays, and their original tracks have been licensed to folks like Netflix. With the 2022 release of their debut full-length album Currents, the duo revealed an ever-evolving, cohesive blend of introspective writing, soulful, gritty blues, boot-stomping basslines, and intricate electronic arrangements.

They’ve toured widely with their dynamic live show, garnering even more fans worldwide – they’re currently on their Technicolour Campfire Tour. Yet still, they return to the solace and vastness of nature and find inspiration in its beauty. We hope they’ll feel right at home in our beloved park.
