Maria in the Shower (BC)
Humourous and Apocalyptic, Human and Otherworldly. That’s about as good a description as any for the four lads, none of them named Maria, who perform for the world as Maria in the Shower. The band’s music is a part Vaudeville, part cabaret, part punk and part folk mix, featuring Tin Pan Alley ditties, Cuban shuffles, spirituals, roots, rockabilly and more. They call their music swing/folk/gypsy, and see themselves as wandering minstrels, as entertainers hewn “from the old cloth.” On stage, the quartet dances, jumps, dresses to impress and shake their hips, and just when you think you’ve had too much fun, someone hauls out an accordion and ramps up the energy just that much higher.
