Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2024

Kevin Breit & Cyro Baptista

Ontario / Brazil

It’s hard to know where to start with a duo whose individual accomplishments would take up more room than we have here. OK – Kevin Breit plays guitar and Cyro Baptista is a percussionist.

Breit was born in Ontario and Baptista in Brazil. Between them they have worked with just about everybody you have heard of, and a hundred more you haven’t. Paul Simon, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Dr. John, Caetano Veloso… that’ll be Cyro. In addition to fronting The Sisters Euclid, Kevin has added his guitar to Norah Jones, K.D. Lang, Roseanne Cash, Sylvia Tyson, and Natalie McMaster, among dozens more – women like Kevin.

This duo likes jazz, they like folk, they like world music and they put it all together in a most audacious and original way. Back in the nineties, Kevin and Cyro formed a group called Supergenerous and made a couple of records for Blue Note. Check out their version of “Home on the Range” or “Everybody’s Talkin’” on their 2008 release, Sao Paulo Slim, to get a sense of how talented and quirky these unlikely partners in rhythm are. Anyway, almost thirty years after starting to play together they’ve taken time from their myriad projects and collaborations to reconnect and do some shows. Thankfully one of them is this festival.
