Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2024

Fränder

Sweden / Estonia

Fränder may be a folk band, but they really rock! The group makes what they describe as ‘modern acoustic folk music’, taking ancient Nordic sounds,  revitalizing them with energy and passion and incorporating contemporary influences.

The group started when the Dluzewski siblings, who hail from the Håga region in Sweden (which has a long history rich in Nordic oral and musical traditions), joined forces with Estonian musician Säde Tatar to create a new and modern form of an ancient music. The group plays all acoustic instruments but bring a rock energy and vitality to their music – and to their live shows. The head of the Estonian Viljandi Festival says “they convey their music with a tremendous joy of playing, a powerful energy and, of course, enviable instrumental skills. They captivate their audience.”

Fränder describes their approach: “We are energized by, and find creative freedom within, the expressive modern sound of Nordic traditional music. But we have never been interested in merely reproducing the past, instead we strive to find new ways back into the future.”

The group is Gabbi Dluzewski (Swedish mandola, vocals), Björn Tollin (percussion), Daniel Dluzewski (double bass, vocals), Säde Tatar (flute, bagpipes, vocals) and Alva Granström (vocals, fiddle).
