Empanadas Ilegales

British Columbia

Formed in 2017 through late-night jam sessions and rooftop gigs, Empanadas Ilegales is a Vancouver-based psychedelic cumbia and salsa collective that ignites dance floors with their genre-defying sound.

Comprised of musicians with roots in Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Canada, the seven-piece ensemble blends blends the vibrant, percussion-heavy cumbia rhythms of Colombia’s Caribbean coast with surf-rock, surf-rock guitar textures, salsa melodies, and free-jazz-inspired horns into a kaleidoscopic, hypnotic sonic experience.

Their music is both homage and invention: folkloric traditions meet experimental synths, Persian and Andean influences intertwine with dub grooves, and swirling guitars collide with raucous horns to create expansive, dance-driven compositions. Their latest release, Sancocho Trifásico, pushes this hybridity further, delivering the band’s most layered, soulful, and adventurous work to date. Previous releases include Papayón, recorded live at Vancouver’s Fortune Sound Club, and Creepy Mambo, a psychedelic tribute to cumbia classics, later documented with a rooftop recording at the Warrington Art Collective.

Known for their electrifying live shows, Empanadas Ilegales has performed at Sled Island, Montreal Jazz Festival, Calgary Folk Fest, SunFest, Mixto Fest, and JUNOFest, earning a reputation for playful, immersive performances that transport audiences to a vibrant world of contagious grooves and altered sonic landscapes. Their music is a rhythmic call-and-response connecting hemispheres, bridging cultures, and igniting dance floors wherever they play. -DS
