DeVotchKa

Devotchka

DeVotchKa (CO)

This four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble has built an adoring audience for their musical fusion of Romani, Greek, Slavic and Bolero music with American punk and folk roots. Their name comes from the Russian word for “girl”, devochka (девочка), but their music is much more global, incorporating at various times cabaret, polka, mariachi, tango and flamenco into a very cool indie mix. Based out of Denver, Colorado, the quartet makes their music using a wide variety of instruments including the theremin, bouzouki, accordion and sousaphone, in addition to vocals. Originally a backing band for burlesque shows, in their early years DeVotchKa toured with burlesque performer and model Dita von Teese. Numerous nationwide tours followed in support of self-released records, earning the band an impressive underground following. Their compositions and performance on the soundtrack for the movie Little Miss Sunshine earned them even greater renown. They come to us as one of the hippest bands on the circuit today – one you just don’t wanna miss.
