Derek Gripper
South Africa

An international trailblazer, Derek Gripper is the only musician known to have mastered the intricate technique of the West African 21-string harp, the kora, on a classical guitar.
Based in Cape Town, Derek’s musical influences and interests go far and deep, drawing on the musical transitions from beyond Africa with a distinctly contemporary lens. He travelled in India adapting Carnatic music to the guitar and then found inspiration in the complex syncopations of West African kora music. Having collaborated with prominent kora players like Toumani Diabate and Ballaké Sissoko, classic kora compositions are now a regular part of his dazzling repertoire.
To hear Derek play is to witness something unprecedented on the guitar—a rich, multi-layered soundscape from a single acoustic instrument. On stage, he moves seamlessly between the roles of insightful scholar and irreverent comedian, blending conversation and music with ease. In doing so, he evokes the spirit of the griot tradition—where storytelling and music-making are inseparable arts.
