Briga (QC)

The music of Briga (aka Brigitte Dajczer) reflects a fully-embraced, multi-faceted identity: her father is Polish and her mother is Québecois, she was raised in Western Canada and now lives in Montreal. Her repertoire is a hybrid of songs written in French and English, all accompanied by her fervent violin-playing and deeply rooted in the Easter European and Romani folk songs learned, and added to, from the days her father played the piano to put his children to sleep. Inspired from a year touring the Balkans playing Romani (Gypsy) weddings with Bulgaria’s #1 violinist and her mentor, Georgi Yanex, Briga brought new songs and ideas back to Montreal to perform and record with her band. Turbo Folk Stories was released in 2012. Briga’s singular sound is rooted in folk, with a mix of traditional Bulgarian, Macedonian and Serbian songs.
