Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2024

Big Lazy with Paul Pigat

Location

Paul Pigat is arguably the best guitar player in town – and competitive on the national and international scene as well. While he has a degree in classical music and music theory, he has devoted himself to a different vibe. With his various ensembles, including Cousin Harley and The Smoking Jackets, he has carved out a very respectable career creating great music drawing from just about every genre of popular music – jazz, blues, rockabilly and more.

A few years ago, he did a show in town with Stephen Ulrich, the similarly diversely talented guitarist of New York ensemble Big Lazy. Big lazy – a trio featuring Yuval Lion (drums), Andrew Hall (bass) in addition to Ulrich, creates music that has been described as “Crime Jazz” or “noir and twang”. They are coming to town to join Paul at this year’s festival.

What does this mean? First and foremost, it means that guitar fans will experience a meeting of two brilliant players with similar tastes and unbeatable chops. It also means that you will get to hear one of the more interesting New York bands of the avantgarde Americana scene fattened up with a Canadian co-thinker and picker.
