Cold Specks (ON)

Cold Specks is the name of a band led by Al Spx, the pseudonym of a very talented gal from Ontario with a profound affinity for the Deep South. Her sound has been described as ‘Doom Soul’ – it’s music infused with the soulful, emotional sounds of Deep South gospel, but with a strong gothic streak. Her voice evokes the “spirit feel” of Mahalia Jackson and the visceral vibe of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, but there’s something powerfully and uniquely there that’s all her own. She’s already made a strong impression in the UK where she currently resides, and is creating big waves here at home – she was recently nominated in the Breakthrough Artist category at the 2013 JUNO Awards. It is safe to say that Cold Specks is a name you’ll be hearing a lot of in the weeks, months and years to come. This new and truly singular voice, with her sparse arrangements and haunting rhythms, is going somewhere fast, and once you hear and see her, you’ll join her for the ride.
