Being a guest to the festival is a special experience each year undoubtedly filled with a unifying sense of love and respect towards the entertainers and fellow festival goers. I never thought that feeling could be surpassed until I volunteered. Thousands of volunteers donate their time to make this festival possible, and no matter the job everyone is sporting the most sincere, proud smile. In 2015 it felt incredible to be a part of the festival’s foundation volunteering my weekend. Festival 2016 I decided I wanted to get more involved and became a coordinator. This position gave me the humbling experience of meeting the few dozen other coordinators who are the passionate magicians conducting their committees, doing all and above what is necessary, to create arguably the best Vancouver festival out of literally nothing. Together we made it happen. Respectful communication was the key. Everyone spent hours and hours of volunteer time ultimately dedicated towards a common goal: love to all humans and all music. During the festival, when emotions are heightened, whenever I needed assistance I was constantly met with a smile, willingness, and a positive attitude. I have never been so inspired by this dedication and unspoken philosophy. This festival also performs as a reminder of proper conduct in life. A contagious love is produced here. This IS the reason I will, for as long as possible, be a part of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.
